3 Characteristics of a Disciple:
- Hold unto Jesus’ teaching – John 8:31
“If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.”
Hold comes from Greek work “menno”
It means: remaining, abiding, living- in Jesus teaching.. living in the word.. what you are about… saturate yourself with Jesus’ word and teaching… then you apply what you’ve learned. Key: what you are about.
- Someone who loves other people…. John 13:34-35
“A new command I give you, love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
Self-sacrificing, no holding back kind of love. When Jesus says, “As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” …in other words, complete sacrifice.
Question: What kind of sacrifice are you willing to make for friends, family, unsaved?
- Bears fruit. John 15: 5, 8
“I am the vine, you are the branches. If a man remains in me, and I in him, he will bear much fruit. Apart from me, you can do nothing. .. this is to my Father’s glory that you bear much fruit, showing yourself to be my disciples.”
Those words “remains in me”- also come from the Greek word, menno…. in other words, if somebody lives in me, and I in them, natural results- they are going to bear fruit. In other words- They are going to reproduce themselves, if they are disciples living in me, other disciples will come from them, other people will come to know the Lord. And then the fruits of the Spirit will become evident: love, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness… that person will be different. People will know there is something about that person. That is when we will begin bearing fruit.
