The Lord struck me with two thoughts today. One was from the book, “Fervent,” which is a follow-up study to the movie, The War Room.” In speaking of our children, Priscilla Shirer reminds us of Psalm 127:4, “Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth.” This is a verse I am familiar with but Priscilla added a new dimension to it. In thinking of our children as arrows, she concluded, “We raise them up to shoot them out into the culture, bearing the image of Christ to the world.”
I love that thought. We do our best to raise our children in the Lord in the hopes that when it’s time for them to leave the nest, they are prepared to live productively and to also be bearers of Christ in their world. We, as parents, are charged with the task of letting them go, in a sense, shooting them out into the culture. I can picture my children and now my grandchildren as they take their place in the world as bearers of the image of Christ to those around them. Reflecting Christ’s love, joy, and peace to those whose paths they cross.
When I think of that, I’m reminded of another verse. III John 4. “I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in truth.” Yes, it is truly a joy when you are aware that your children and grandchildren are walking in God’s truth, that they have chosen the narrow path.
But some may read this and lament that this sentiment, while noble, has not born out in reality in their family. Then how about being warriors ourselves, prayer warriors, and begin praying these very characteristics into our children and grandchildren. Pray with the eyes of faith of who God created them to be, reflectors of Christ’s light in a dark world. We can pray God’s Word with boldness concerning our loved ones. We can pray that as we shoot them out into the world that they will grow to be a reflection of Christ. We can pray that we will someday hear that they are walking in truth. As Priscilla suggests, we can pray that the enemy will no longer stunt their potential and confidence, that our children and grandchildren will be strong and confident in the Lord. That the Holy Spirit will instill courage and form a wall of protection against the enemy’s attempts to gain ground.
Pray that God will guard their friendships, that their passions be attuned to faith, that they be committed to purity, walk with wisdom and learn discernment. Pray they keep a clear conscience, that they respect authority. Pray they will be fruitful in every good work. God has a plan but there is an enemy who would like to steal it away from them. Let’s pray for our children and grandchildren to be aligned with God’s purpose for their lives. Finally, ask the Holy Spirit to give you increased insight as to how to pray for them.
